Connecting directly from a mobile phone to a low-Earth-orbit satellite introduces new threat surfaces. Our Cyber Security teams assessed new vulnerabilities created by space-based connectivity and ensured encryption remained intact.

Software teams ensured the satellite link integrated seamlessly into our terrestrial network. They adapted core systems, managed signalling and latency differences, and ensured voice and data routed smoothly so the experience felt just like a normal mobile call.

At our Newbury HQ, Operations, Property & Project Management teams installed a ground station in the car park, managing logistics, power, cabling and cross-team coordination. This infrastructure connected satellite links back into the live network.

Our Communications and External Affairs team shared the story internally and externally, engaging media and positioning us as a leader in non-terrestrial connectivity. British astronaut Tim Peake joined the announcement to celebrate the moment

Our Technology Research team explores future technologies including AI/ML, quantum computing, 6G and satellite connectivity. They were the first to ask: Could a 5G call from space actually work? This is where the concept was tested for technical feasibility.

To turn possibility into reality, we partnered with AST SpaceMobile, securing commercial agreements and investing in simulation and testing. Partnerships, Commercial & Legal teams structured the deal, aligned strategy and created the commercial framework that enabled satellite-to-mobile integration.

Our Network Engineers designed, built and deployed the temporary satellite gateway, integrating it into our core mobile network infrastructure. Field Engineers carried out live testing in remote areas with no coverage — proving devices could connect directly to satellites. They made space work like a mobile mast
