A Network Advantage: 10 years of Rainbow@Vodafone

Last week, we celebrated the 10 year anniversary of rainbow@vodafone, the LGBT+ network in Vodafone Germany.
We caught up with Sven van der Veen, Chair of the network to hear his thoughts on the importance of allyship and how we can lead by example.

I have been a Business Analyst at Vodafone Germany for more than eight years - progressing from a relatively junior position to my current senior role. Since last year, I have also been Chair of the rainbow@vodafone network, Germany - our . This year the network

The Rainbow@Vodafone network has set itself the task of creating a visible and vibrant community where all LGBT+ colleagues and allies together create a safer space, promote diversity, and combat discrimination. We advise the company on ‘queer in the workplace’ issues and build ties with other networks.

A united voice

Within the LGBT+ community, unity is paramount in advocating for our rights and needs. Together, our collective strength surpasses individual efforts. In today's increasingly polarised societies, it's imperative for our community to assert a strong, unified voice.

It’s especially important that we have allies in this. An active ally is open to others; they ask questions and listen without making assumptions. An ally supports and advocates for minorities and marginalised groups. When they witness wrongdoing, they intervene and speak up. They leverage their influence, experience, and privileges for positive impact.

Allyship isn't about rescuing someone but rather creating spaces where people can develop their own strengths. We need allies, and allies need us. Together, we find strength and power.

We have achieved a lot, but there is still a long way to go. Especially in the current political situation, we need a strong community and employers like Vodafone.

We need more culture that unites and less culture that divides.

Lead by example

As a tech company it’s especially important for Vodafone to lead the way in all of this. We play a crucial role in connecting people worldwide, including marginalised communities who often struggle to find their niche. Apps, for instance, facilitate connections and provide answers, empowering those historically excluded.

I see a future where AI psychology gives everyone access to treatment, to a conversation. We all know that mental health challenges are more common in our community and this kind of solution could be key to helping with that. I am curious and excited to see where the journey takes us.

What if we could take pride in what we do and be our true selves?

At Vodafone, you can truly belong.
