Ryan McCarthy
Consumer Fixed Commercial LeadI first joined Vodafone through the graduate programme, and what really attracted me was the opportunity to explore different parts of the business. At the time, I wasn’t entirely sure what direction I wanted to take my career in—but I knew I wanted to learn by doing. The grad programme gave me that space to figure things out, to discover what I enjoyed, and just as importantly, what I didn’t. That clarity has shaped every step I’ve taken since.
A Culture That Encourages You to Keep Going
One of the things I’ve come to really appreciate is the culture within the Consumer team. There’s a strong mindset of “if at first you don’t succeed, try again”—but it’s not just about resilience, it’s about support. It’s a team that backs each other, and that makes a huge difference when you’re constantly pushing yourself to take on new challenges.
That culture starts at the top. Our Consumer Director, Chris Stagg, is a huge advocate for development and leads by example. His approach has created an environment where learning, experimenting, and growing are part of the everyday.
Finding Belonging in the Big and Small Moments
Vodafone does a great job of creating space for people to connect—whether it’s through team parties, company-wide events, or sports society activities. There’s always something happening, and no matter what you’re into, you’ll find something that makes you feel part of the community. Those moments outside of work really help build a sense of belonging.
Flexibility That Supports Real Life
The commitment to hybrid working has been a game-changer. In a time when many companies are pulling people back into the office full-time, Vodafone’s approach has been refreshingly consistent. It’s given me peace of mind, especially with an office move on the horizon. Knowing that flexibility is here to stay has taken a lot of pressure off and made it easier to plan for the future.
Growth That’s Recognised and Rewarded
I’ve always been someone who’s motivated by learning and progression, and Vodafone has really supported that. Over the past three years, I’ve been promoted three times—which is something I’m incredibly proud of. It’s not just about the titles; it’s about knowing that the work you put in is seen and valued.
Learning Through the Highs and Lows
Some of the most important lessons I’ve learned have come during the tougher times—especially when commercial performance hasn’t gone as planned. Those moments have taught me how to act quickly, adapt, and stay focused under pressure. It’s not always easy, but it’s where the real growth happens.
Mentorship That Makes a Lasting Impact
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of some incredible mentors. Robbie Cotter, Erinda Mali, Simon Crawford—and of course, Colin Tuite, who started as a grad 14 years ago—have all played a huge role in my journey. Their guidance, encouragement, and belief in me have made a lasting impact.
Making a Difference for Customers and Partners
In my role, I get to help shape propositions that really matter to our customers—making sure they’re fair, affordable, and free from any unexpected surprises. I’m also really proud of the work we do with our franchise partners, especially in broadband and TV. They’re a huge part of our success, and it’s rewarding to work so closely with them.
Looking Ahead: Always Room to Grow
What excites me most about the future? The room to grow. There’s always more to learn, more to do, and more ways to make a difference. I’m motivated every day by the chance to keep developing my skills in an environment that not only allows it—but actively supports it.
