James Williamson
Sales Operations ManagerMy time at Vodafone has been nothing short of amazing. The culture and environment here are truly exceptional, with incredible people who have supported and guided me in every role I've taken on.
My journey began in 2006 as a sales adviser. Since then, I've had a number of promotions and various roles, from Team Manager to collaborating with our outsource partners on exciting onshore and offshore sales campaigns. Currently, I’m the Sales Operations Manager overseeing 600 in-house sales advisers in our Voice and Chat teams across Stoke and Manchester. We support both new and existing customers, whether they're inquiring about broadband deals, looking for a new phone or SIM, or even considering leaving us.
Diversifying my career experience
In 2018, I transitioned from sales to the Channel Implementation team, working on impactful projects like the latest Apple/Samsung launches. I also had the pleasure of working on initiatives for our Indirect Partners (like Curry’s and AO), which included a new system integration that brought numerous benefits to our operations.
This seamless connection of various systems and platforms streamlined everything. It allowed for real-time data sharing that reduced the need for manual tasks and minimised errors, and as a result, our teams could focus more on sales performance and strategic initiatives. Not only did it boost our productivity and efficiency, but also improved communication and processes for our customers, leading to faster decision-making and enhanced customer service overall.
The biggest challenge with this project was the coordination with multiple partners to align on key milestones - we had a strict delivery date that could not be missed because any delay would prevent our partners from trading and mean significant losses for all of us. But, thanks to the hard work and tenacity of all stakeholders involved, we successfully delivered the project on time and within scope. It required close collaboration with our partners and their project teams to share timelines and ensure robust plans were in place to mitigate potential issues, and in the end, we did it!
Back in the sales world
Now that I’m back in the sales area my primary focus is driving our sales performance and customer metrics, while enhancing the team culture to truly champion Vodafone's vision of being the best place to work. My experience on the Channel Implementation team gave me a wide range of new skills that I use to boost sales and improve customer performance in my current role.
I am passionate about examining how our teams collaborate with the wider business to ensure we effectively share feedback, support customer challenges, and contribute to future launches. This approach will help us provide the best possible experience for both our customers and employees.
Vodafone really is the perfect place if you're looking for more than just a job. It’s a place to build a fulfilling career. I’ve had a multitude of learning and development opportunities across all my different roles, and the company’s commitment to upskilling its employees is truly remarkable. There are a wealth of training materials on offer. There are also a wide variety of career paths - I've seen colleagues move into diverse roles within the company, just like I have.
One of my favorite experiences was the recent Leader Labs training, which provided invaluable insights into handling different scenarios and ensuring we remain logical and forward-thinking in our decisions. I’ve also participated in management courses that focus on mindset and tackling business challenges as well as people management, and completed my Prince 2 certification.
If you're motivated and willing to push yourself, the opportunities for advancement and progression at Vodafone are endless.
