How we’re helping older generations navigate the digital world with Hi Digital

Now in its fifth year, Vodafone Foundation’s Hi Digital programme continues to empower older people with digital skills that foster independence and connectivity. Ordering prescriptions online, using Google Maps, learning how to use the Transport For Ireland apps to make the most out of their free travel - the list is endless as we help them to navigate the digital world and improve their everyday lives.

Alongside the Hi Digital online course we created with our charity partner, ALONE, we’ve also introduced Hi Digital Drop-in Fridays to our retail stores. They’re a safe, comfortable space for older customers to come in and get hands-on support. It’s been such a success that we’ve expanded the initiative to the Netherlands and Romania, along with our Hi Digital online course being available in Czech Republic, the UK, and Luxembourg too.

To date, over 90 thousand older adults in Ireland have received support across our Hi Digital services. We’ve partnered with the Irish Girl Guides, training over 350 Girl Guides as ‘Digital Champions’ to support older people throughout the country, and it’s so rewarding to see the real community impact as we boost digital inclusion for older people nationwide.

Some of the team behind Hi Digital are here to tell us more below.

Retail Training and Onboarding Manager

As the Retail SPOC for The Foundation, I facilitated the training initiatives to create our team of Hi Digital Ambassadors. I also helped to deliver Drop In to our retail owned estate in 2023 with the wider retail team and supported the continued rollout of Hi Digital to our franchise partner estate, with the aim of all stores eventually having Drop In enabled.

Agents are encouraged to share images and stories of Drop-In sessions to our internal social media site, Viva, and we’ve set up volunteer days for colleagues to help at Drop-In days in our stores. Volunteers always say how much they enjoy it, and what a great feeling it is to be a part of it all.

Foundation Project Manager

I’ve been the Project Manager on Hi Digital since 2022, working with ALONE to develop a free e-learning platform with bite-sized lessons covering key digital themes: how to use smartphones, identifying scams, creating an email account, and so on. We’ve also developed in-person classes and support for people who find e-learning daunting.

Judith Croke
Franchise Partner Manager

I am part of the team managing five retail partners across Ireland covering 66 stores, who collaborated with us to allow the expansion of Hi Digital Drop-in Fridays nationwide. I assisted in selecting suitable stores, worked with Area Managers to identify Hi Digital champions, and coordinated training sessions for Laura and the Alone trainers. Now, we’ve grown to 38 stores since launching with just 10 partner stores in November 2023!

Making our world a kinder place

I see the impact we’re having every week! Just the other day I was sent a note about a customer who’d travelled three hours to Dublin on a bus, had an issue with his phone and couldn’t contact his family, and ended up in a Vodafone store getting help to not only fix it, but learn what happened so it wouldn’t happen again.

The relationships being formed are genuinely heart-warming to see as well. We joke that we have surrogate grandchildren working in our stores! They get adopted by these older customers who come back repeatedly because they feel so comfortable with our agents - and they love to bring them cakes and chocolates and sweets to say thank you. I feel such a sense of pride every time I see a new image or hear a new customer experience story.

Earlier this year, Vodafone Foundation in Ireland commissioned research to assess the impact of ‘in-person’ support provided through the Hi Digital programme in our stores, and with our charity partners around the country.

Participants reported that gaining digital skills boosted their confidence, helped them to stay connected with family and reduced their reliance on others for everyday tasks. When I read testimonials like, “Makes me better able to cope with everything, the world!”, and “It makes you feel a little more confident”, I feel so proud to work for a company that invests in supporting people to actively engage in the digital world so that no one is left behind.

Hi Digital’s multifaceted support system - combining skilled retail partners, dedicated trainers, and welcoming community spaces - has made a tangible difference for Ireland’s elderly population. By making digital technology more accessible and less daunting, we’re opening doors to greater autonomy, connection, and happiness among older adults.

Each Drop-in Friday session becomes more than just a workshop - it is a doorway to new possibilities, a space where friendly guidance and patient support turn apprehension into accomplishment. The most rewarding part for me is witnessing their transformation as they gain confidence and independence. Seeing participants, who may have started with doubts or hesitations, realise that technology can connect them to family, friends, and essential services is deeply gratifying. Their growing digital skills not only bridge the technical gap but also break the chains of social isolation that so often accompany ageing.

What if we could make the world a better place?
