Junior Site Reliability Engineer

Hey there! My name is Raluca, and I'm thrilled to share my story with you. As a Junior Site Reliability Engineer in one of Vodafone's Security teams, I'm fortunate to be part of an exciting and ever-evolving field. In this blog post, I'll give you a glimpse into my current role, talk about my past experiences, delve into what sparked my passion for a career in technology, share why I decided to join Vodafone, and discuss future plans. Plus, I'll throw in some valuable advice for those just starting out in this industry. So, let's jump right in!

Current Role

I'm currently a member of the Cloud Engineering team, and over the past year, we've been focused on implementing the TaaS (Telco as a Service) strategy. TaaS is all about collaborating with engineers from various markets to create a development environment and a comprehensive ecosystem of Network, IT, and Platform capabilities. The ultimate goal is to build solutions once and reuse them multiple times. This approach addresses the inefficiencies we previously faced, where each market was independently designing and implementing solutions to identical problems.

In my role as an SRE in the Security team, my primary responsibility is to ensure the security of the platform. This involves enforcing, monitoring, and maintaining security measures to safeguard our systems. A significant part of our work revolves around automating the configuration of diverse security tools, enabling us to implement and enforce best practices across the entire platform. We are also responsible for responding to security alerts and implementing necessary mitigations. This dynamic role keeps us engaged with the latest security best practices, allowing us to apply them to real-world challenges across multiple markets, not just in the UK. It's an exciting opportunity to make a tangible impact in the realm of security and protect our systems from evolving threats.

Previous Experience

Before joining the Security team full-time, I completed a degree apprenticeship in Computer Science. During this time, I also worked briefly as a project manager. In that role, I oversaw project execution and ensured timely completion of goals. This experience improved my organizational skills and provided a broader understanding of Vodafone's direction. While not directly gaining technical expertise, I observed the importance of teamwork and efficient processes in development teams.

Interest in a Career in Technology & Joining Vodafone

As I was growing up, I couldn't ignore the way technology became more and more intertwined in my daily life. I was fascinated by how it made tasks easier and connected people in new ways. Although being a project manager allowed me to have better visibility of Vodafone’s future strategies, the constant growth and evolution of technology inspired me to pursue a more technical role, with the goal of driving positive change and advancements in the future.

The idea of being part of this ongoing tech revolution and making a meaningful impact is what motivated me to choose this path. The freedom to explore diverse paths in technology was a pivotal factor in my decision to remain at Vodafone. Knowing that I could venture into different roles, be it web development, UX design, cloud engineering, data science, and beyond, without the pressure of making the "perfect" choice was truly liberating. This freedom allowed me to focus on giving my best and seizing every opportunity that comes my way.

Looking Forward

I'm really excited about the future as we continue to join forces with more and more markets and onboarding them onto TaaS. It’s amazing to see the results of engineers across the globe coming together to solve common engineering challenges. I’m also very keen on keeping up with the latest in security and ensuring we maintain a good security posture for the entire TaaS.

Advice for Aspiring Tech Professionals

For those interested in starting a career in the technology industry, my best piece of advice would be to embrace experimentation and hands-on learning. Find opportunities to build something of your own, be it a website, a mobile application, or even something as simple as setting up your custom email address. There are abundant online resources available to guide you through your chosen pursuits. Getting hands-on experience and continually pushing your boundaries is the best way to learn and improve your skills.

I hope you found this post insightful and inspiring! Best of luck on your own exciting journey in the world of technology. Embrace the adventure ahead with enthusiasm and determination. You've got this!
