The standardisation of our mobile networks is one of the key successes that Vodafone has used to drive our massive growth in revenue, subscriber numbers, device numbers, and data volumes over the last 30 years. 

The purpose of this role is to shape our industry’s eco-system and increase market size by driving economies of scale and enabling new services via the creation and enhancement of Industry and Vodafone Standards and Specifications.


This role focuses on the successful industry standardisation of new technology for high performance, cost effective networks and terminals and/or the tools to automate the operation of 5G and 4G Radio Access Networks (e.g. AI techniques for NR optimisation, and automation of O&M for 4G IoT).


The role involves active engagement and contribution to external industry Standards Development Organisations (SDOs) and forums (e.g. 3GPP RAN 2, SA 5) as well as leading the Vodafone-internal activities to determine our company view.


This requires close work with the rest of Group Network Architecture, Operations, R&D, Enterprise & Consumer Products and Services, Security, Vodafone Business, Group Marketing – Terminals, OpCos and Group Public Policy. Furthermore, we work closely with our strategic network and mobile chipset vendors and frequently travel to / participate at long haul international standardisation meetings. 

Job Responsibility

Key accountabilities and decision ownership:


•    Designs components for high performance/cost effective, interoperable, multivendor public communications networks that facilitate the development of innovative/differentiating products.
•    Pulls internal technology teams together to determine the direction we should push standards, and then drives the SDO to deliver world class solutions.
•    Engages with suppliers and third parties to assist in achieving standardisation goals.
•    Consultant to all areas of the business on the standards areas represented. 
•    Drives eco-system projects related to area of own standards work.    



Core competencies, knowledge and experience:


•    Authoritative, persuasive, with excellent technical communication skills, the capability to influence large international meetings and to present effectively to Senior Management. 
•    Good technical understanding of Radio Access Network signalling & user plane protocols; RAN architecture; RAN operational aspects, and developments in RAN-AI and SON/MDT.
•    Ability to analyse the technical and business impact of changes to 3GPP Standards. 
•    Focussed on the long term end-customer experience that results from their work.
•    Creative: stamps individuality on internationally accepted designs. Works in multiple virtual project teams. Innovative: produces elegant solutions and original inventions
